10 Works

Their Eyes Were Watching God

Zora Neale Hurston · 1937 · Culture

Primary

Invisible Man

Ralph Ellison · 1952 · Culture

An unnamed Black narrator navigates American society — from the Jim Crow South to Harlem — discovering that white America refuses to see him as a full human being. Ellison's novel is the definitive literary exploration of FBA invisibility in American life.

Primary

Beloved

Toni Morrison · 1987 · Culture

Based on the true story of Margaret Garner, an enslaved woman who killed her daughter rather than see her returned to slavery. Morrison's novel explores the psychological aftermath of slavery — the haunting, the grief, and the impossible choices it forced on Black mothers.

Primary

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

Maya Angelou · 1969 · Culture

Angelou's memoir of her childhood in Stamps, Arkansas — the racism, the sexual violence, the silence, and the transformative power of literature and community. The first volume of her seven-part autobiography.

The New Negro

Alain Locke (ed.) · 1925 · Culture

The defining anthology of the Harlem Renaissance, edited by philosopher Alain Locke. Includes essays, poetry, fiction, and visual art by Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Countee Cullen, and others. Locke's introduction articulates the philosophy of the New Negro movement.

Primary

The Collected Poems of Langston Hughes

Langston Hughes · 1994 · Culture

The definitive collection of Hughes's poetry — from the jazz-inflected verse of the Harlem Renaissance through his later social protest poems. Hughes wrote about the everyday lives of Black Americans with a directness and musicality that made him the most beloved FBA poet of the 20th century.

Primary

Dust Tracks on a Road

Zora Neale Hurston · 1942 · Culture

Hurston's autobiography, tracing her life from her childhood in Eatonville, Florida — the first incorporated Black municipality in America — through her years at Howard University and Columbia, her anthropological fieldwork, and her literary career.

Primary

Blues People: Negro Music in White America

Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones) · 1963 · Culture

Baraka's history of Black music in America — from the work songs of slavery through blues, jazz, and R&B — arguing that the music is the most authentic expression of the FBA experience and that its commercialization by white America is a form of cultural theft.

Notes of a Native Son

James Baldwin · 1955 · Culture

Baldwin's first essay collection — including the title essay written on the day of his father's funeral and the Harlem race riot of 1943 — establishes his voice as the most penetrating analyst of American racial psychology. He examines his own hatred, his father's bitterness, and the American refusal to see.

Primary

Playing in the Dark: Whiteness and the Literary Imagination

Toni Morrison · 1992 · Culture

Morrison's literary criticism examining how the presence of Black people — the 'Africanist presence' — has shaped American literature, even in works that appear to be exclusively about white characters. She argues that American literature cannot be understood without understanding its racial subtext.

When Harlem Was in Vogue

David Levering Lewis · 1979 · Culture

The definitive history of the Harlem Renaissance, documenting the literary, artistic, and musical explosion of the 1920s and 30s, the role of white patronage, the internal debates about the purpose of Black art, and the movement's eventual decline during the Depression.

Hip Hop America

Nelson George · 1998 · Culture

George's history of hip-hop from its origins in the South Bronx through its transformation into a global industry, examining the music, the business, the politics, and the cultural meaning of the most important FBA cultural creation of the late 20th century.
