3-Minute Summary

Written during Robeson's years of government persecution — his passport revoked, his career destroyed — Here I Stand is his defiant statement of political belief. He refuses to recant his support for labor rights, anti-colonialism, and the Soviet Union, and connects the FBA freedom struggle to global anti-imperialism.

Why It Matters

Robeson was the most famous Black American in the world before the government destroyed his career for his political beliefs. His refusal to be silenced — at enormous personal cost — is one of the great acts of FBA resistance.

Important Passages

'I am a Negro. The house I live in is in Harlem — this city within a city, Negro metropolis of America.'
