3-Minute Summary

Between 1936 and 1938, the Federal Writers' Project interviewed over 2,300 formerly enslaved people across 17 states. The resulting narratives — preserved at the Library of Congress — are the largest collection of first-person testimony about American slavery.

Why It Matters

These are the voices of people who lived through slavery. No secondary source can substitute for the testimony of those who experienced it. The collection is freely available and searchable at the Library of Congress.
